GK Secures a Bright Future
May 2007
The fast growing BrightHouse chain, already with 151 stores nationwide selling furniture, consumer electronics and domestic appliances, is highly aware of the importance of in-store environment.
“Our customers spend a fair amount of time in our stores in order to browse and buy”, observed BrightHouse Property Manager, Dave Cooney. “In this context, effective air conditioning can be vital”.
Warming to his theme – but in a cool, considered manner, Dave also pointed out that “good quality heating and ventilation systems, allied to planned and responsive maintenance, don’t only keep customers and staff happy, but our accountants can be pretty pleased too”.
Accordingly, Doncaster-based, GK Industrial are delighted to have been awarded a national service and maintenance contract for BrightHouse.
“We at GK fully endorse Dave Cooney’s ideas,” said David Goldberg, GK Industrial’s long established Managing Director. “Our experience is that the optimum ambient temperature can have a sustained positive impact on staff and customer morale”. |

GK working in partnership with retailers to improve the customer and staff environment
January 2007
Rises in energy prices and legislation issues mean it is now more important than ever for the retail sector to adopt innovative energy efficient air conditioning systems to actively control their internal environment.
There are significant advantages of installing and maintaining air conditioning and ventilation for the workplace whilst there are considerable recompenses for investing in air quality systems; both financially and ethically.
Productivity in the workplace is affected by many aspects of the working environment including motivation, stress, personal relations and workload. However, in face of increasing temperatures to UK business, Indoor Air Quality and the working temperature has also been proved to have a significant impact on employee productivity and behaviour.
By keeping temperatures at a continuous sensible level in both the summer and winter, retailers make the shopping experience more comfortable for its customers, whilst saving money on their utility bills and keeping productivity levels high for their staff.
Air conditioning is designed to create comfort within the internal environment by producing clean, dehumidify the air and prevent mould growth, all without draught or noise. With a system such as this in place and through its careful control it is possible to improve comfort for your customers and the productivity of your staff.
In fact it is scientifically proven that accidents tend to occur more frequently in extreme temperatures and that mental performance and work rhythm can be affected by a temperature increase. So it is essential to maintain a comfortable internal environment for both patients and employees in order to achieve greatest working efficiency and comfort levels simultaneously.
The benefits of air conditioning however don’t stop there; there is a common misconception that air conditioning units only provide cooling when in fact a system can provide heating and cooling throughout the year. The benefits of this are particularly useful for the retail environment, enabling customers to have a perfect constant temperature all year round. Not only does cooling have an impact on utility bills, heating bills jump by 8% on average for every one degrees centigrade increase.
In addition to the filter system, in cooling mode an air conditioning unit dehumidifies the air, limiting the growth of dust mites and mould within the air which can have a negative effect on those with allergies. For a retail environment, where customers are a priority, this is a major benefit as eliminating any internal factors that may cause discomfort to customers is essential. A further benefit of an air conditioned system, that may often be forgotten, is that if the correct humidity levels are maintained internally there is a positive effect on your indoor equipment. |

Wilkinson looks to become one of the most energy efficient retailers on the high street
November 2006
This summer we saw rising temperatures, rising energy bills and an increasing spotlight on energy sustainability and legislation. All this adds up to businesses looking at ways to improve their energy efficiency, reduce costs and improve the working environment.
Wilkinson, one of the UK’s fastest growing independent retailers is working with GK Industrial to improve energy efficiency levels and the environment within in its network of stores for its customers and staff.
During the last quarter of 2005, Wilkinson worked with GK Industrial to trial three new stores with Free Cooling systems. As a result, August saw GK Industrial embark on a major project to modify and retrofit cooling systems across 140 Wilkinson stores. A few months earlier in May, GK Industrial also began work on replacing lighting fittings across 42 stores to further increase energy efficiency. The project is expected to take up to 24 months to complete.
The Free Cooling and replacement lighting initiatives are estimated to deliver multi million pound savings to Wilkinson over the next ten years, with a payback on investment expected in four years.
David Pflasterer, Property Maintenance Manager for Wilkinson said: “We worked closely with GK Industrial to review our energy efficiency across the store network. Wilkinson has set an objective to become one of the most energy efficient retailers on the high street. This is not just in response to increasing energy costs and impending legislation, but as part of our ongoing commitment to protect the environment.”
GK Industrial devoted considerable resource into researching energy efficient solutions, both appropriate and commercially viable to meet Wilkinson’s specific needs.
For the cooling systems, GK Industrial recommended installing Free Cooling into existing Wilkinson Stores. As opposed to refrigerated air handling systems, where air is constantly filtered and cooled using compressors virtually 24 hours a day, Free Cooling is significantly more energy efficient and provides vastly improved air quality.
Free Cooling systems are triggered when the external ambient air is at a lower temperature than indoors, drawing fresh air into the store through the ventilation system. The result being reduced energy costs coupled with a more positive experience for Wilkinson’s customers.
GK Industrial is working with Wilkinson to replace sales floor lightings across 42 of its stores. All new Wilkinson stores since 2000 have been fitted with low energy, high frequency light fittings replacing the conventional high energy fluorescent fittings that were in use over the past 20 years. David Goldberg, Managing Director, GK Industrial adds: “Here at GK Industrial we are about providing our clients with ongoing support and maintenance, which result in ongoing cost savings and improved services.”
Wilkinson is a great example of a retailer taking significant moves to become energy efficient. The project will no doubt save them both money and energy.”
David Pflasterer continues: “In addition to the cost savings and sustainability issues, the new systems will help create a better ambience in store, inevitably leading to an improved customer experience and employee working environment.
“GK has delivered a first class service both in the maintenance and in new store installations and we see them as a long standing partner for the years ahead".
