The R22 problem

January 2010

R22 is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) gas which is used as a refrigerant in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Sales and use of 'virgin' R22 is banned by law from 1 January 2010.

Until 31 December 2014 temporary use of recycled/recovered R22 is possible but availability is expected to be limited and costs high. Legislation also prohibits companies from stockpiling R22 or recycling it from one customer to another. From 1 January 2015, sales or use of recycled/recovered R22 will be prohibited, however refrigerant wholesalers are already stating they have no supplies of recylcled R22 for onward selling.

Air-conditioning and refrigeration systems installed up to 2003 are likely to use R22 refrigerant. We are able to provide dedicated solutions to this issue.
